யாப்பு என்பது செய்யுள் இலக்கணம். எழுத்து → அசை → சீர் → தளை → அடி → தொடை.

Yaappu is the grammar of verse: letter → asai → seer → thalai → adi → thodai.

அசை இரண்டு வகை: நேரசை, நிரையசை.

An asai (syllable) is either ner or nirai.

நேரசை: தனிக்குறில் (க), தனிநெடில் (கா), குறிலொற்று (கல்), நெடிலொற்று (கால்).

Ner: a single short (க), a single long (கா), short + consonant (கல்), long + consonant (கால்).

நிரையசை: குறிலிணை (பல), குறில்நெடில் (பலா), குறிலிணை ஒற்று (பலர்), குறில்நெடில் ஒற்று (படாம்).

Nirai: two shorts (பல), short + long (பலா), two shorts + consonant (பலர்), short + long + consonant (படாம்).
