தமிழ் உலகின் மிகப் பழமையான, இன்றும் உயிரோடு வாழும் செம்மொழிகளில் ஒன்று. கி.மு. 300-ஆம் ஆண்டு முதலே தமிழுக்குச் சான்றுகள் உள்ளன.
Tamil is one of the oldest classical languages still spoken today. There is written evidence of Tamil from about 300 BCE.

தமிழ்-பிராமி கல்வெட்டுகள் Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions
குகைகளிலும் பானை ஓடுகளிலும் மிகப் பழைய தமிழ் எழுத்துகள் கிடைத்துள்ளன. அவை தமிழ்-பிராமி எனப்படும். இன்றைய தமிழ் எழுத்துகள் அதிலிருந்து மெல்ல மெல்ல மாறி வந்தவை.
Very old Tamil writing has been found on cave stones and pottery. It is called Tamil-Brahmi, and today’s Tamil letters slowly grew from it.

சங்க காலம் · The Sangam age
தொல்காப்பியம் Tholkappiyam
தமிழில் இன்று கிடைக்கும் மிகப் பழமையான இலக்கண நூல் தொல்காப்பியம். எழுத்து, சொல், பொருள் என மூன்று பகுதிகளை உடையது.
Tholkappiyam is the oldest Tamil grammar book we still have. It has three parts: letters, words and meaning.

சங்க இலக்கியம் Sangam literature
அன்பையும் வீரத்தையும் கொடையையும் பாடும் அழகிய பாடல்கள். எட்டுத்தொகை, பத்துப்பாட்டு என்று தொகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
Beautiful poems about love, bravery and generosity, collected as the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthogai) and the Ten Idylls (Pathuppattu).

சங்கப் பாடல்களில் · In Sangam poems
யாழ் The yazh
யாழ் பழந்தமிழரின் நரம்பிசைக் கருவி. சங்கப் பாடல்களில் யாழைப் பற்றிப் பல இடங்களில் வருகிறது. யாழ் கலையகத்தின் பெயரும் இதுவே.
The yazh was an ancient Tamil stringed instrument, mentioned many times in Sangam poems. Yazh Kalaiyagam shares its name.

பழங்காலம் · Ancient times
திருக்குறள் Thirukkural
திருவள்ளுவர் எழுதிய திருக்குறளில் 1330 குறள்கள் உள்ளன. அறம், பொருள், இன்பம் என மூன்று பால்களாகப் பிரிந்துள்ளது; பல மொழிகளில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural has 1,330 couplets in three parts: virtue, wealth and love. It has been translated into many languages.

சங்க காலத்துக்குப் பின் · After the Sangam age
ஐம்பெருங் காப்பியங்கள் The five great epics
சிலப்பதிகாரம், மணிமேகலை, சீவகசிந்தாமணி, வளையாபதி, குண்டலகேசி ஆகியவை ஐம்பெருங் காப்பியங்கள். இளங்கோவடிகள் சிலப்பதிகாரத்தை எழுதினார்.
Silappathikaram, Manimekalai, Seevaka Chintamani, Valayapathi and Kundalakesi are the five great epics. Ilango Adigal wrote the Silappathikaram.

பக்திப் பாடல்கள் Devotional hymns
நாயன்மார்கள் பாடிய தேவாரமும் ஆழ்வார்கள் பாடிய நாலாயிரத் திவ்வியப் பிரபந்தமும் இன்றும் கோயில்களில் பாடப்படுகின்றன.
The Thevaram, sung by the Nayanmars, and the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, sung by the Alvars, are still sung in temples today.

12-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு · 12th century
கம்பராமாயணம் Kamba Ramayanam
சோழர் காலத்தில் கம்பர் இராமாயணத்தைத் தமிழில் அழகிய கவிதையாக எழுதினார். அது கம்பராமாயணம் எனப்படும்.
In the Chola period the poet Kambar retold the Ramayana in beautiful Tamil verse. It is called the Kamba Ramayanam.

1578 · 1578
முதல் தமிழ் அச்சுநூல் The first printed Tamil book
1578-இல் கொல்லத்தில் “தம்பிரான் வணக்கம்” அச்சிடப்பட்டது. இந்திய மொழி ஒன்றின் சொந்த எழுத்தில் அச்சான முதல் நூல் இதுவே.
In 1578, “Thambiran Vanakkam” was printed at Kollam. It was the first book printed in an Indian language in its own script.

பாரதியார் Subramania Bharati
மகாகவி சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார் விடுதலை, தமிழ், பெண் உரிமை பற்றி எழுச்சிமிக்க பாடல்கள் எழுதினார்.
The great poet Subramania Bharati wrote stirring poems about freedom, the Tamil language and women’s rights.

1891 மற்றும் 2021 · 1891 and 2021
தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்து Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu
மனோன்மணீயம் சுந்தரம் பிள்ளை 1891-இல் தமது நாடகத்தில் எழுதிய “நீராருங் கடலுடுத்த” பாடல், 2021 டிசம்பரில் தமிழ்நாட்டின் மாநிலப் பாடலாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது.
Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai wrote “Neerarum Kadaludutha” in his play in 1891. It was declared the State Song of Tamil Nadu in December 2021.

2004 · 2004
செம்மொழி அறிவிப்பு Classical language status
2004-ஆம் ஆண்டு இந்திய அரசு தமிழைச் செம்மொழியாக அறிவித்தது. செம்மொழி என அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட முதல் இந்திய மொழி தமிழே.
In 2004 the Government of India declared Tamil a classical language, the first Indian language to receive that status.

தமிழ்நாடு, புதுச்சேரி, இலங்கை, சிங்கப்பூர், மலேசியா எனப் பல நாடுகளில் 8 கோடிக்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் தமிழ் பேசுகின்றனர். இலங்கையிலும் சிங்கப்பூரிலும் தமிழ் ஆட்சி மொழிகளில் ஒன்று.
More than 80 million people speak Tamil in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and around the world. It is an official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore.
